The staff of “HTV Magazine” is made up of 20 juniors and seniors selected by the broadcast adviser each spring for the advanced “Broadcast Journalism II News” class.

Students apply for HTV, and after an interview process, and consideration of work completed in Broadcast Journalism I, a new staff is announced.  These students produce “HTV Magazine,” shown every three or four weeks on local cable access as well as at school.  The pre-requisite for Broadcast Journalism I is a full year of Introduction to Speech, or English I Honors, or special permission from the instructor.

Those chosen for the staff are expected to work after school to complete their work on segments for the show.  Some members of the HTV staff are actually third-year students who first took Broadcast I as sophomores.

Other students choose to apply for the second advanced course offered at Hillcrest, “Broadcast II Productions.”  This group produces the weekly in-house program “Static,” shown only at school.  This class is not expected to work off campus, or after school.  Most of their work is completed during their class time.  They focus on Hillcrest students and school activities.

As the 2006-2007 school year began, the HTV staff began work on the 139th edition of the magazine show.  By the spring of 2007, the students should complete “HTV Magazine” number 150.

The show is produced by teens, for teens, and seeks to cover issues and events of interest to that age group.  Students select their topics, go into the field to gather the stories, and edit with Final Cut Pro software, on MacIntosh computers purchased via grants and fundraisers.

In fact, HTV students and their adviser continue to raise money to purchase all production equipment used for the class.  The HTV classroom is a renovated metal shop.  It contains seven edit bays and an office, plus classroom space that doubles as studio space when taping takes place.
